Operating System
Your computer's operating system performs basic tasks such as handling input from the keyboard, sending output to the monitor, keeping track of files and folders and talking to external devices, such as printers. It also provides an environment in which other programs, such as word processing programs and web browsers, can run. Common operating systems include Windows XP (for PCs) and Tiger (for Macs).
It's important to keep your operating system up to date, as updates are released from time to time to address security issues. If you're running Windows, you can download updates from the Microsoft security site (opens a new window). This site will also allow you to set up your PC to receive updates automatically from Microsoft, so you don't have to remember to do it yourself.
