Frequently asked questions

Setting up the app

What mobile devices does the Home Finder app work on?

The app is available for mobile phones and tablets running at least Apple iOS 4.0 or Android 2.2. Functionality may be limited on some devices.

How do I find out more, arrange a viewing or make an offer on a home I find using the app?

You'll need to call the estate agent displayed for that property. Scroll down to the foot of the details in the app. You'll find contact details for the estate agent there. Simply tap to call them.

What sort of personal information gets stored in the app?

The app only stores figures you set for estimating how much you might be able to borrow and what your monthly repayments might be. You can reset or delete this information using sliders in the app. It will also store notes, ratings, photos and videos you make about your favourite properties. Halifax won't have access to these details unless you give them to us.

How does the app use data?

The app stores your settings in the borrowing and repayment estimators so that they are saved the next time you use the app. It also stores any notes, ratings, photos and videos you make about properties in your favourites. You can reset or clear your settings at any time by adjusting the sliders to zero. You'll need to delete favourite properties from the list to remove your notes, ratings, photos and videos.

When you search for properties using your current location or the camera view, the app finds homes for sale nearby using location information. We, Google and/or DPG may (through the use of cookies or similar tools) receive this information (i.e. GPS signals from your mobile device) or other data that can be used to approximate your location (such as your mobile ID). By accessing any part of this app or providing information to us, you consent to the use and transfer of your information as set out above and in our privacy policy.

How much does the Home Finder app cost?

Halifax doesn't charge you to download and use the app. Your mobile operator may charge for you some services so please check with them.

Can I still use the app even if I don't have a phone signal or Wi-Fi connection?

You can still view property details, and add them to your favourites with notes, ratings, photos and videos. You can also estimate borrowing and monthly repayments, and read the home-buyers guide. You'll need a phone signal, Wi-Fi connection or GPS to search for properties.

Why doesn't the camera view seem to work as well for me as it does in the demo?

Different factors affect how well the camera view performs for different handsets and phone operating systems. The app needs at least Apple iOS 4.0 or Android 2.2. Functionality may be limited on some devices.

What can I do if the app stops working, freezes or won't launch?

First try closing the app or switching off your mobile and trying again. Make sure you've downloaded the latest version from your app store.

My phone battery runs down more quickly when I'm running the app. How can I fix this?

Open the list of running apps on your phone and close Home Finder manually. Restart the app when you want to use it again.

What do I do if the call-back form isn't working?

Try closing the app or restarting your phone. Or you can call the Halifax team at the number in the app and arrange a convenient appointment.

Does the app include all properties for sale?

The property search is powered by FindaProperty.com and includes properties from their estate agent network around Great Britain. Halifax is not an estate agent.

Why do some homes for sale not show up in the app?

The property search is powered by FindaProperty.com and includes properties from their estate agent network around Great Britain. Halifax is not an estate agent.

How accurate is the local information provided in the app?

Information about schools, transport links and property sales history is provided by third parties. We aim to provide data that is accurate and complete, but there may be occasions when the source information is unavailable or not up to date. Please use information in the app as a guide only, and check independently before making firm decisions or commitments.

If I search in my app store how do I know the app is genuine?

The app is on available only for Apple and Android and can be found by searching in the Apple App Store or Google Play for Halifax Home Finder. The app will be listed as Halifax Home Finder and will have the Halifax brand in the icon.

Searching for properties and saving favourites

What properties can I search for?

You can search for properties for sale, around Great Britain (excl N Ireland).

Can I send details of my favourite properties to my partner, family or friends?

Yes. Save properties to your Favourites by selecting the heart icon. When you later review your Favourites, you'll be able to email the details from your phone - together with your own notes, ratings and photos you've added. The details will be sent as a PDF attachment by email to your contacts.

Are the details or status of properties in my favourites automatically updated?

Yes. Property details in your favourites are refreshed each time you view them while you're online. So, details such as the price or description may change if the estate agent has updated them.

How many properties can I add to my favourites?

You can save up to 20 favourite properties.

How can I save my searches?

Your most recent searches are saved automatically and can be viewed from the 'Search' screen. You can also clear the list from here if you wish.

Why would I include my own notes and photos when I send Halifax details of a property I'm interested in?

When a Halifax mortgage specialist calls you back, it will help make your application proceed more easily if they can view more about the home you want to buy.

Can I use the app to make an appointment with the branch?

Yes. Tap the button in the contact screen to call a Halifax mortgage specialist. They'll be able to book a convenient branch and time for you - or may be able to help you directly over the phone.

How do I add my notes and photos to an email to share?

First, you'll need to favourite a property, then you can save notes, photos and videos with that property's details. From there you'll be able to email a PDF of the property details with your notes and photos to your friends and family.

Finding out about mortgages

How does the app work out how much I might be able to borrow?

The app calculates estimated figures based on any settings you enter for guaranteed income, credit commitments and how much of your own money you might put into buying a property. Any amounts shown are for illustration only. The actual amount you could borrow will be based on a review of your individual circumstances and our current lending criteria. This may be higher or lower than illustrated by the app. There are many costs involved in buying a home. The amount you can afford to spend will depend on several factors including your income, monthly outgoings and savings.
YOUR HOME MAY BE REPOSSESSED IF YOU DO NOT KEEP UP REPAYMENTS ON YOUR MORTGAGE.

How does the app work out estimated monthly repayments?

The app calculates estimated figures based on settings that you enter. All repayment estimates are based on a full repayment (capital and interest) basis. This information does not contain the details you need to choose a mortgage. Any figures are for illustration only and are not a formal Mortgage Offer or Decision in Principle. Make sure that you read the separate key facts illustration before you make a decision. Ask your mortgage specialist for a personalised illustration.

Why is an estimated monthly repayment value not available on some properties?

The app looks at the value you've set in the Borrowing screen, using the 'Deposit amount' slider. If this is lower than 10% of the property value, it will not display an estimated monthly repayment figure. This is because you are unlikely to get a mortgage offer if your deposit is less than 10% of the purchase price of typical properties for sale. Other house buying schemes may be available with different terms. Visit Halifax.co.uk for mortgage products that we offer.

Will the app tell me what mortgage I can afford?

No, but it may help you work out for yourself what you can afford - by making it easier to estimate possible repayments on certain properties, or what you might be able to borrow, based on different settings you can enter and adjust in the app. Ask your mortgage specialist for a personalised illustration.

Please note any amounts shown in the app are for illustration only and are not a guarantee of lending. Can I get a mortgage for the amount I estimated in the app?

Not necessarily because the app only estimates what you might be able to borrow, based on settings you enter in the app. This information does not contain all of the details you need to choose a mortgage. Any figures are for illustration only and are not a guarantee of lending. The actual amount you could borrow will be based on a review of your individual circumstances and our current lending criteria. Ask your mortgage specialist for a personalised illustration.
