DECIDING THE BEST WAY TO BORROW

If you dip into your overdraft briefly to cover small payments like unexpected bills, our new daily overdraft fee could mean you'll pay less than you would have before - and make the costs easier to see.

If you borrow larger amounts for longer, the new fee could cost you more. So, you may want to think about applying for a different type of borrowing that may suit you better and cost you less.

Types of borrowing

Overdraft

Good for:

  • Paying an unexpected bill
  • Covering extra spending
  • Tiding over till payday

Credit Card

Good for:

  • Larger one-off purchases
  • Spreading the cost
  • Flexible repayments

Personal Loan

Good for:

  • Borrowing a large amount
  • Car or home improvements
  • Fixed repayments

If you’re using your overdraft a lot and you have savings, it may be worth using them to pay off what you can. The interest you earn could be less than your overdraft fees. So, you may be better off by using your savings to reduce your overdraft balance and lower your fees.
