Security Top Tips

Beat burglars with a few simple precautions.

Outside...

  • Locks: Fit visible, key operated window and door locks and keep them locked.
  • Alarm: Install a burglar alarm and fit the box in a prominent position. Always set the alarm before leaving the house.
  • Doors: Make sure all external doors and frames are sturdy and in good condition.
  • Lighting: Ensure your house is well lit. Fit security lighting as this can help to deter a thief.
  • Fences: Garden fences and gates are easy targets. Add trellising on fence-tops to make climbing over difficult.
  • Gardens: Thorny hedges and prickly bushes planted around the perimeter of your property can help to deter intruders. Keep them trimmed to allow neighbours to watch over your property.
  • Paths: Lay gravel on paths. The noise may put off burglars.

Inside...

  • Keys: Always remove keys from inside doors and windows, especially if the lock can be reached through the letterbox. Never leave a spare key out – burglars will check under plant pots or dustbins.
  • Lighting: Make your home look and sound occupied even when you are out. Use timer switches for lights and radios when you are away.
  • Blinds: Net curtains or blinds prevent burglars looking in and seeing your valuables.
  • Property:Keep your valuables out of sight and mark your property with an engraving tool or invisible ultra violet pen.

General Checks...

  • Keep it tidy: Keep ladders, garden furniture and tools locked away – they are a temptation to burglars.
  • Everybody needs good neighbours: Keep an eye out over your neighbours’ property and ask them to do the same for you.
