Make safe: action you must take to stay covered
Act now - your cover depends on it.
There are a high number of burglaries in the UK. Figures from the Association of British Insurers show that during 1997 over half a million people had to make an insurance claim because of theft. So it's essential that you take proper security precautions. You’ll find these described below. Please read them carefully.
Your policy requires you to fit these locks:
At the moment your home contents policy protects you against theft and malicious damage. Please make sure that the work is completed within forty five days of your contents policy start date, as your future protection from theft and malicious damage depends upon you having taken the action described here.
- Main entrance door
The main entrance door must be secured by any lock which can be locked by a key from both the inside and outside. (This includes key operated multi-point locking systems.)
- Other doors
Other external doors, including access doors from integral garages, must be secured by any lock which can be locked by a key from both the inside and the outside. This includes key operated multi-point locking systems, or key operated security bolts fitted horizontally at the top and bottom.
- Sliding doors
Sliding doors must be secured by either a lock which can be locked by a key from both the inside and the outside, a key operated multi-point locking system, key operated security bolts (fitted top and bottom) or an anti-lift device plus one key operated patio door lock.
- Double doors (french doors or windows)
Double doors must be fitted with either a lock which can be locked by a key from both the inside and the outside and two key operated security bolts top and bottom operating vertically or a key operated multi-point locking system.
Windows and skylights which open and are accessible from the ground without a ladder, or from adjoining roofs, porches, or down pipes, require key operated window locking devices (including key operated multi-point locking systems).
- Louvre windows
All panes must be securely fixed with suitable adhesive in their brackets.
You need to make sure that you use all your locking devices whenever:
- You or your family leave your home unattended. Please remove all keys from locks and store out of sight
- You go to bed at night, although there is no need to use window locks in occupied bedrooms.
