Flood Protection Top Tips
You might not be able to stop the rain but there are a number of things you can do to aid flood protection and reduce potential damage to your property.
Keep drains clear
Ensure all drains and the area around them are clear of debris. Heavy rain can carry litter into your drains which will back up as a result.
Collect run-off water
Install a water butt to collect rainwater from your roof. This is especially important for flood prevention in areas that are largely paved over as these surfaces will no longer absorb rainwater efficiently.
Store sandbags
If you know your area is liable to flood, keep a stock of sandbags. Your local council may supply these in an emergency but it's safer and quicker if you have your own to hand.
Have a plan
Planning ahead will save time and improve your flood protection. Make sure you know where electricity and gas is turned off, decide what you will do with furniture and check you have adequate insurance cover.
