What Buildings and Contents insurance covers
Buildings Insurance covers your private dwelling, its garages and outbuildings, fixtures and fittings, patios, terraces, footpaths, swimming pools, tennis courts, drives, walls, fences, hedges and gates.

Contents Insurance covers household goods, valuables and personal belongings owned by you or your family, or for which you/they are legally responsible.

^Top

New for old
We offer a new for old policy, which means that if you make a successful contents claim, we will replace the relevant items with brand new ones of equivalent value.

^Top

Number of bedrooms
We offer Contents cover for homes with up to five bedrooms. Buildings cover is available for properties with up to eight bedrooms.

^Top

Outbuildings (gara ge, shed etc.)
Buildings Insurance covers you for damage to your home and other outbuildings in the boundary of your home, e.g., a garage,  shed or greenhouse. Contents Insurance provides cover for the items stored in outbuildings.

^Top

Flood damage
Damage by flood is provided for with both Buildings and Contents cover.

^Top

Burst water pipes/leaking radiator/water damage
This would be covered under both the Buildings and Contents sections of your home insurance. Home Emergency cover provides assistance to rectify the problem so that no further damage happens.

^Top

Insurance for students
You cannot get insurance for your home/hall of residence while you are at college.

^Top

Bikes
If you choose Personal Belongings cover on your policy it will automatically cover bicycles up to £500 in and outside your home.

If your cycle is worth over £500 you will need to change your policy to add this as a 'specified item'. This will ensure it is covered inside and outside your home.

^Top

Rented properties
Buildings and Contents insurance is available if you are letting a property out to tenants.  Contents Insurance is available if you are renting.

^Top

Second homes
You can insure a second home, subject to underwriting requirements.

^Top

Holiday homes abroad
Currently, you need a specialist policy to insure holiday homes abroad.

^Top

Home Emergency Cover
Home Emergency Cover provides assistance for a sudden event that was not expected by any of your family and which needs immediate action to make the home safe and secure, avoid damage or further damage to your home, make your home fit to live in and if necessary restore electricity, gas or water services to your home if they have totally failed.

^Top

Personal Belongings cover and Contents Plus
Contents Plus covers money, credit cards, mobile phones, camcorders and pedal cycles whilst in the home. Personal Belongings cover provides cover for personal belongings both inside and outside the home.

If you have Personal Belongings cover, you do not need Contents Plus.

^Top

Unlimited buildings cover
Because rebuild values can go up and down depending on what the housing market is doing at the time, we provide unlimited buildings insurance so you are always covered for the full cost of rebuilding your house.

^Top

Business use
This is when your home is used for anything other than private residential purposes.

^Top

Converted house/flat
A converted building is a residential property for which the original purpose was not residential.

^Top

Valuables
Valuables are articles of gold, silver and other precious metal, jewellery, furs, pictures, works of art, collections of coins, medals or stamps, watches, camera equipment, binoculars, telescopes, microscopes and camcorders.

^Top

How much you should insure your home/contents for?
Normally your home should be insured for a minimum of the property's rebuilding cost and your contents should be insured for their total combined value. However, Halifax Home Insurance offers unlimited cover for Buildings.
