Account charges

This section tells you about the charges that apply to the following accounts for standard account services and special services, and about the interest you'll be charged if your account goes overdrawn.

Charges for standard account services

Non-Halifax cash machine charges

We do not charge you for taking money out of a Halifax Liquid Gold, Halifax Web Saver or Halifax Instant Saver account at a Halifax or LINK cash machine. Please note that if you make a withdrawal from one of these accounts using a non-Halifax cash machine, the bank or building society which owns the cash machine may charge you. The amount of any such charge will be taken out of your account.

Charges for special services

You have to pay a charge when you use the services listed below.  We will tell you what charges apply when you ask to use the service - before we go ahead with the transaction.  The charge will come out of your account immediately.

  • CHAPS payment  - You may ask us to transfer money electronically from your account to another UK account, using the CHAPS system.
  • Special presentation -  You may ask us to specially present a cheque.
  • Foreign currency, travellers' cheques and cross-border transfers - You may ask us to use a number of special services relating to foreign currency, travellers cheques and the telegraphic transfer of money abroad. In addition a charge may apply if money is telegraphed to your Halifax account from abroad.  Ask at any of our branches for details.

Charges for special services - ARCA only

  • Stopped cheques - If we stop a cheque because you ask us to, we will charge you.  We will not charge you for stopping a lost or stolen cheque
  • Copy of paid cheque - If you ask us for a copy of a cheque which you have written to pay money out of your account, we will charge you.

Interest for overdrawn accounts

If your account goes overdrawn (unless it is a Halifax Stepped Income Reserve, Halifax Guaranteed Reserve and Matured Funds), we will charge you interest at a rate of 7% a year (see condition 14 of the Deposit Account conditions, condition 15 of Halifax Instant Saver conditions and condition 10 of the Asset Reserve Cheque Account conditions - a copy of these are available from any of our branches).

Halifax Web Saver conditions can be viewed online and conditions for Halifax Premium Savings Direct will be sent to you after opening the account.
