  • What is contactless?

Contactless is a payment function where you can make payments without using your PIN worldwide. Within the UK the limit is £100. Other contactless limits apply outside of the UK, please ask the retailer. Remember you can still use your card for purchases using Chip and PIN.

The £100 contactless payment limit was introduced on the 15 October 2021, and requires retailers to update their terminals in order for payments up to this limit to be accepted.

Can I use my contactless card overseas?

Only contactless cards issued after 17th November 2017, including replacement cards, can be used worldwide wherever you see the contactless symbol.

What are the benefits of using contactless?

It’s quick, convenient and saves you time. There’s no need to rummage around for the right amount of change, or enter your PIN for most of your contactless transactions.

Where do contactless payments appear on my statement?

Most contactless payments will appear in the main section of your online statement within a few days. However, some transactions may show first in the ‘View pending transactions’ section.

Is using contactless to pay secure?

Absolutely. Your contactless card has the same anti-fraud protection as regular ‘chip & pin’ cards. If your card is lost or stolen, your card has protection against fraud loss, provided that you inform us as soon as you realise your card is missing. For added protection, you will occasionally be asked to enter your PIN when making a payment and your PIN will always be needed for payments of over £100.

    Where can you use contactless?

Any retailer who displays the contactless symbol (please place the contactless symbol here) can accept contactless payments. This may also be displayed on the terminal. You can now use your contactless card to pay for journeys on TfL buses, London Underground, London trams, Docklands Light Railway, London Overground and some national rail services. You simply need to touch your card on the yellow reader as your board your chosen method of transport – there is no need to buy a physical ticket or key in a PIN.

Can you use contactless on Tube, DLR, Tram and London Overground?

You can now use your contactless card to pay for journeys on TfL buses, London Underground, London trams, Docklands Light Railway, London Overground and some national rail services.

Will I be charged twice if I accidentally double tap on the reader?

No. The reader and card are configured to ensure that you will only be charged for one transaction.

What happens if I try to pay for goods over the contactless limit of £100?

For transactions over the contactless limit, the retailer will need you to make purchases using chip and PIN or swipe transactions.

Can I set my own contactless limit?

Yes, you can now use our Mobile Banking app to choose a contactless payment between £30 & £95. Changing your contactless payment limit will also affect your Apple Pay or Google Pay limit.
