Tips to help you get your bills under control

Follow these simple tips to help you keep on top of your bills. By doing the work now, you might save some time and money.

  • Review your payment dates

    Review your payment dates

You may be able to change your payment date to a date to suit you. Ring up whoever you're paying and see if you can change when your bill payment is due.

It can be helpful to have your bills coming out on the day you get paid. If you are paid weekly, spreading payments out over the month could help. Using our upcoming payments service you can keep track of what payments are due to leave your account and see how much you'll have left until you're next paid.

For some bills you may also be able to make a single yearly payment. For example, your car or home insurance, or your road tax. By doing this you could pay less overall.

  • Pay in a way to suit you

Pay in a way to suit you

A Direct Debit lets your bank or building society know that a business or service can collect payments from your account on a set date. The business or service will let you know the amount you need to pay each month.

You can also make regular payments by setting up standing orders. The payments will then be sent when they're due. No more forgetting and much less effort. Standing orders can be easily set up and cancelled when you want through our Mobile Banking app or Online Banking.

You can also make one-off payments online and over the phone.

If you prefer to pay by phone, you’ll need to remember to make all your payments on time. Setting up a reminder on your phone or adding the payment deadlines to your calendar, may help you.

  • Make sure you are getting a fair deal

Make sure you are getting a fair deal

Price comparison websites are a great place to search for a fair deal. Whether you are looking for a new agreement or seeking a better price for renewing a contract.

If your agreement is coming to an end on your gas, electricity or broadband provider, take a look, you may find a better deal.

Independent money advice services, including MoneyHelper, have advice on using comparison websites. They also have tips and advice on how you could reduce your bills.

Make a note of your outgoing payments

Make a note of your outgoing payments

For all of your bill payments, list how much they are and when they need to be paid. Think about things like your mortgage or rent payments, mobile phone costs and utility bills. Use an average cost of your last three bills if they are different each month.

Check if you have any subscriptions and memberships. Using our Mobile Banking app, you can view, block or cancel subscriptions.

Our spending insights tool may help you if you bank online. It will show you where you are spending your money and will tell you the categories of spend. By doing this, you can see your spending patterns and where you might be able to make some savings.
