How could Brexit affect your car insurance?

You may have read in the news that in the event of a no-deal Brexit, you will need to get a Green Card as proof of insurance to drive in the European Union (EU). Under European Union regulations, drivers in the United Kingdom that are planning or will be driving in the European Union (EU) will need a Green Card as proof of insurance from their insurance provider.

You may be affected if:

  • you drive across the Northern Ireland/Republic of Ireland border
  • you are planning to drive your vehicle in European Union (EU); for example a family planning on driving to France for a holiday.

How do I get a Green Card?

Here's what you can expect from us:

  • the Green Card will be supplied by your insurance provider
  • you will need to contact us on 0344 209 0471 about a month before you plan to drive in the European Union (EU) to get a Green Card
  • there is currently no charge to our customers for requesting and obtaining a Green Card
  • once your request for a Green Card has been made, it will take 5 working days to process and will be delivered in the post
  • anyone driving in the European Union (EU) without without a Green Card may be breaking the law.

Further information is available from the Government
