How to compare home insurance
You will want to be sure you are getting the best deal for your money when shopping for home insurance. This means getting the cover you need for the best price.
You can only get Home Insurance Select directly with us.
What you will need to compare home insurance:
- Check your current policy. If you already have insurance, check whether it is still valid and if it provides the cover you need first.
- Look for ways to bring home insurance costs down. For example, installing stronger locks or a burglar alarm.
- Decide what cover you need. Choose what policy you want and how much cover you'll need. You might need cover for costly items, or Away from home cover.
- Compare quotes. Use comparison and home insurance websites to shop around for the best deal.
- Value your items and home. Knowing the value of your home and the things in it will help you to avoid being over or under insured. With Halifax Home Insurance Select you don't need to worry about how much your home is worth. You'll be covered for the full rebuild cost.
Contents insurance
This type of cover protects the items inside your home against theft, and damage by things like fire, flood and storm. You could protect your household goods and personal belongings, including:
- Furniture
- Household appliances
- Clothes
- Electronics and gadgets
- Jewellery
Building insurance
Buildings insurance protects you against damage to the structure of your home and its fixtures and fittings. It covers events such as fire, flood and storm.
If you own the property you live in, a combined policy can protect both the building and the things inside.
If you rent, you only need to get contents insurance. It's up to your landlord to take out buildings insurance.
There are limits, terms and exclusions to all levels of cover. It’s a good idea to check your policy closely so you know that all the important things are covered.
Why compare home insurance?
Comparing home insurance is the best way to find the right deal for you. Knowing the value of your home and the items you own can help make sure you are not under or over insured.
If you are under insured, this could mean you’d pay more of your own money to replace or repair an item that’s not insured for the full amount. Being over insured could mean you pay for more cover than you need.
You’ll also want to know that you are covered for any expensive items you own. There's usually a limit to how much you can claim for an individual item - unless it's named on your policy and insured for its full value. For example, if you have a piece of jewellery that's worth a lot, you'll want to know that you can claim for the full cost to replace it if you need to.
