Frequently asked questions

Temporary car insurance basics

  • Temporary car insurance provides short-term cover, enabling you to borrow a vehicle from a friend or relative. This could be helpful for a one-off task, or a trip where you plan to share driving responsibilities.

With temporary car insurance you could get cover for anything from 1 hour, up to 30 days.

Cover is usually comprehensive, covering any damage caused in the event of an accident.

This could be a convenient alternative to adding someone as a named driver on an annual insurance policy. Especially if it’s a one-off or irregular occurrence.

  • Halifax Temporary Car Insurance offers comprehensive cover. For detailed information about what’s included and excluded, please review the following documents:

  • Halifax Temporary Car Insurance is available on cars and vans:

    • with an engine size of 3,999cc or less
    • under 3.5 tonnes in weight
    • with 8 or fewer seats.

Halifax Temporary Car Insurance is available on motorhomes:

    • with an engine size of 3,000cc or less
    • under 5 tonnes in weight
    • with at least one bed of 6 feet in length, wardrobe cupboards fitted, and has seating for diners at a table.
  • Vehicles need to be insured to tax them, so temporary car insurance could be a helpful short-term solution in some circumstances.

The vehicle will need to show as insured on the Motor Insurance Database, which may take some time to update. Anything from a few hours, up to 7 days.

  • Most insurance providers require you to have a valid MOT before they’ll agree to provide cover.

Temporary car insurance could be a solution in some circumstances though. For example, you need to drive a car which has been off the road (SORN), to get an MOT before the previous one expires.

  • Temporary car insurance offers flexible cover for anything from 1 hour, up to 30 days. You simply make a one-off payment for the cover you need – nothing more. To apply:

    • fill in a short form – we’ll need some basic information, including your GB driving licence number. You’ll also need to provide the vehicle registration, and set a cover start date within the next 28 days
    • see your quote price – based on your information and the options selected, this will be the total cost for comprehensive temporary car insurance
    • buy and get motoring – if you’re happy with your temporary car insurance quote, simply complete your purchase online using a credit or debit card

Your temporary car insurance policy starts from the date and time you entered when you completed your quote and purchase. Your insurance certificate, which is your proof of insurance, should arrive within 15-30 minutes.

  • Yes. There are scenarios where you might like to purchase temporary car insurance, even if you already have an annual insurance policy.

For example, if your underlying policy doesn’t cover you for business travel, you might like to purchase one-off temporary car insurance. If you travel for work regularly, you might prefer to change your annual policy instead.

Another example could be that you want to lend your car to a friend or family member, just as a one-off. If it’s a more regular occurrence, just weigh up the cost of temporary car insurance, versus adding a named driver to your annual car insurance policy.

A car must always be insured if you haven’t declared it as off the road (SORN), and it’s not securely parked on private property.

  • To get temporary car insurance, the vehicle doesn’t need to have an underlying insurance policy. However, that would only really apply if the vehicle has been declared as off the road (SORN).

  • Legal expenses are meant to cover the costs of making a claim against another person who is at fault in a road traffic accident, or to defend motoring prosecutions.

This element of the policy is underwritten by RAC. For more information on what’s included and excluded, please review the following documents:

About your policy

  • The amount of excess varies and will be confirmed during the temporary car insurance quotation process. This is shown before you purchase, and in your insurance certificate and schedule if you go on to buy cover. The excess is the first part of any claim you must pay. For glass/windscreen claims the full excess is applicable.

  • If the short-term policy holder is driving and has an accident, it won’t affect the vehicle owner’s no claims discount. It’s the driver’s responsibility to declare any accidents to their own insurer, or if they take out a new policy in future. That may affect their future premium costs.

  • Yes. Halifax Temporary Car Insurance automatically includes third-party cover if you’re driving within the EU, EEA and Switzerland. That’s providing the car is in the UK when the insurance starts and ends.

    • travelling to meetings
    • borrowing a car for work on a day-by-day basis
    • borrowing a vehicle when yours is in the garage for repairs

    • needing a bigger vehicle to transport extra equipment or large items.

The policy only covers the main short-term driver, who must hold a full GB driving licence.

Exclusions apply. We do not cover damage or injury when using a vehicle for deliveries, door-to-door sales, or taxi services. That includes any hire and reward activities, such as carrying passengers or parcels for payment. In addition, we do not cover hired vehicles.

  • No. We don’t provide cover to secure the release of a seized vehicle, or for any loss or damage following confiscation, requisition, or destruction under order of government, public or local authorities.

For more information, review the following policy:

    Dayinsure refund policy (PDF 307KB).

You can cancel your policy at any time if there have been no claims, or incidents likely to give rise to a claim. You’ll be entitled to a refund of the unused premium.

If you cancel the policy before it starts, you’ll get a full refund of the premium.

If you cancel the policy after it’s started, we’ll recalculate your insurance premium based on the date your policy started until the date you cancelled it. We’ll refund you the difference between the recalculated insurance premium and the insurance premium you already paid.

The cost of a short-term policy will be proportionally more than a longer-term policy, so you may receive less than you expect. We won’t be able to refund you for days or part days you’ve used.
