Passcode scams

One way we keep your account safe is with a passcode.

Find out what they are and how it can protect you.

What is a passcode?

It’s a unique set of numbers that we send to make sure it’s you using your account.

A passcode is similar to a PIN, but you only use it once.

Scam callers may ask you for a passcode. If this happens, hang up.

If you get a code out of the blue, contact our fraud team straight away.

 How passcodes work

  • You may get a passcode by text or automated call when you do things like:

    • Sign in to Online Banking.
    • Buy something online using your card.
    • Change your details, like phone number, address or password.

We’ll need your latest phone number, so please make sure we have it.

  • When we send you a passcode, you’ll need to enter it on your Online Banking screen or our app.

If you enter the wrong number, you may need to call us and then start again.

How to protect your passcode

Keep your passcode private

A Halifax passcode is for you to use and nobody else.

Never share it with anyone.

Only enter a passcode when our Mobile Banking app or Online Banking screen tells you to.

How to spot a passcode scam

If fraudsters get your personal and banking details, they can call you to pretend to be your bank. They may ask you to share a passcode, One Time Password or to use our app to approve something. Fraudsters will make up reasons why you should do this, such as to:

  • Stop a fraudulent payment.
  • Refund your account.
  • Secure your account.

If you get a call like this, hang up.

We’ll never call you to ask you to do any of these things.
