Boost your energy performance

A good Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating could improve your property’s value.

Sunlight is free. So, after the cost of the installation, you could see your energy bills reduce.

Help improve energy efficiency

How much do solar panels cost?

The cost of your installation will depend on the number of panels you choose to install and whether you include a home battery in your system.

The standard price of an 8-panel system with a battery at Effective Home is around £8,500, including installation.

You could claim a discount if you use our trusted installation partner Effective Home and if you’re an eligible Halifax mortgage customer you could also claim £1,000 cashback on your solar panels or battery with the Green Living Reward.

Remember the maintenance

You can expect your solar panels to last at least 25 years. This makes them a great way to save energy in the long-term.

Keep in mind that if you have a solar inverter, you need to replace this after around 12 years.

Are they right for my home?

Solar panels will work for most homes.

It's the direction, angle and size of your roof that will affect how much energy you’ll capture.

  • South-facing roofs, without too much shade from trees or buildings, will capture the most energy.
  • Solar panel systems facing east or west tend to capture 15 to 20% less energy than a south-facing system.
  • The more panels the better. A 10 to 20m2 roof could deliver up to 45% of an average household’s electricity.

Let’s take a closer look

  • They work by converting the energy from the sun into power. Stronger sunshine generates more electricity, but it still works on cloudy days.

    • When sunlight hits the solar panels, the surface releases electrons. These generate an electric charge.
    • This electric charge makes a direct current (DC). The wiring in the solar panels captures this.
    • An inverter converts direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC). This is what the electrical grid uses.
    • AC being the type of electrical current used when you plug appliances into normal wall sockets.

  • To qualify you’ll need to apply for a new Halifax mortgage, additional borrowing or be switching to a new deal. You must also have a Halifax or Bank of Scotland current account at the point of the claim.

You’ll then need to have the solar panels fitted within 1 year of completing your Halifax mortgage, additional borrowing or new deal.

Finally, you’ll need to upload your invoice to your Green Living journey and submit your claim.

  • All Halifax banking, borrowing, mortgage, savings, investment and insurance customers are eligible for £750 off their Effective Home solar panel quote. To get the discount, you need to register through our website.

  • Contact Effective Home if they installed them for you. If you used a different company, get in touch with them directly.
