Green Living Reward Rules
To qualify for the Green Living Reward (we will call this the Reward) you must:
The improvements must be done by a TrustMark approved supplier. A list of the eligible home improvements can be found here.
- Be raising funds through a Halifax mortgage on a property for qualifying energy efficiency improvements on that property. The Reward is available to customers who already own a mortgage property and are exisiting Halifax mortgage customers or who are taking out a new mortgage with Halifax
- Apply directly online via our Halifax or Bank of Scotland websites or by telephone between 9th November 2020 and 31st March 2021
- Register for the Reward by 31st May 2021
- Complete your mortgage transaction and the improvements, and have told us that you have completed them by 31st December 2021

- Your mortgage application is made through a mortgage intermediary
- You change the type of application during the process for example if you are no longer borrowing additional funds for home improvements as a part of your remortgage application

How it works
We will aim to pay the Reward of £500 to customers who qualify within 30 days from when you tell us the work has been completed. We will tell you how to do this when you register.
The Reward will be paid into the account that funds the mortgage. If you don't have a direct debit set up to pay your mortgage you will need to speak to us to arrange payment.
You can only claim one Green Living Reward for a property even if you are doing a number of home improvements or if you make more than one mortgage application for that property in the qualifying period.
Halifax will contact TrustMark when you have told us the work has been completed. TrustMark will check that the works have been completed by a registered supplier. You agree to Halifax sharing your data with TrustMark to do this.
Other important information
Halifax is not responsible for the improvements carried out by your chosen supplier or the checks made by TrustMark. Halifax releasing the funds to you does not guarantee the quality of the work done by the supplier and it is up to you to ensure that you are satisfied with the improvements carried out. Halifax cannot make any guarantee about the costs of the work required or any savings that can be made and you are responsible for making your own decision.
You agree that Halifax may contact you with reminders about this Reward.
Halifax reserve the right to withdraw the Reward at any time.
Why is Halifax encouraging people to do green home improvements?
Halifax is fully supporting the UK Government's aims to reduce carbon emissions. Our aim is to encourage as many of our mortgage customers as possible to make energy-efficient improvements to their homes.
How does the Green Living Reward work?
To qualify for the £500 cashback reward, you'll need to:
You will need to make at least one energy efficiency home improvement from our recommended list and use a TrustMark registered supplier to carry out the work.
- Apply for a qualifying mortgage between 9th November 2020 and 31st March 2021
- Register for the reward by 31st May 2021
- Complete on your mortgage and notify that the work has been complete by 31st December 2021
Can I take out a mortgage on one home but use my Green Living Reward to make improvements on another home I own or rent?
No, the Green Living Reward must be used to make improvements on the home that you will pay for with a qualifying Halifax mortgage.
Can I get multiple rewards if I make more than one energy efficiency home improvment?
No, you can only claim one reward of £500 for each property. You will only be able to register and receive the cashback once, even if you take out a joint mortgage.
I've received an email about the Green Living Reward, is it genuine?
We will send you a friendly reminder if you qualify and have not registered to make sure you don't miss out on the opportunity to receive the cashback reward.
You will need to provide a mortgage roll number and confirm the improvements you plan to make but we will never ask for your bank account details or other personal information as the cashback will automatically be paid to the account your repayments come from. We will also send you a reminder to complete the claim for once you have registered. If the email requests further information or personal details you should ignore the email and contact us by speaking to your mortgage adviser or call us on 0345 850 3705.
Do I qualify for the Green Living Reward if I already have a Halifax or Bank of Scotland mortgage?Our existing mortgage customers qualify if they apply for additional borrowing for qualifying home improvements between 9th November 2020 and 31st March 2021. Our minimum additional borrowing amount is £10,000. It's important to think carefully before taking out additional borrowing against your mortgage as other borrowing options may be more suitable for your needs. If you'd like some help to decide if additional borrowing is right for you, please speak to your branch or call us on 0345 850 3705. Our lines are open 8am - 8pm Monday to Friday, and 9am - 4pm on Saturdays. We're closed Sundays and Bank Holidays.
Do I qualify if I apply for my mortgage through a broker?
No, the Green Living Reward is only available to customers who apply through us directly, in branch, over the phone or online.
Can I register if I don't qualify for the Government Green Home Grant Voucher?
Yes, you can, as long as you meet the Halifax Green Living Reward rules.
Do I still qualify if I use a government grant?
Yes, you do. You can use a government grant or energy company scheme to pay for part or all of your green home improvements and still claim our Green Living Reward, if you qualify.
How do I register?
You can register with your Mortgage and Protection Adviser in branch or over the phone during your mortgage application appointment. You can also register on our website. If you didn’t register during your mortgage appointment and find that you can’t register online, contact your Mortgage and Protection Adviser to help you to register. You will need to do this by 31st May 2021.
Can I register before deciding which improvements to make?
When you register, we’ll ask you which improvements you are planning to make, but don’t worry if you haven’t decided. We recommend you select which improvements might be best suited to your needs. You won’t need to make a decision on the spot and can always change your mind if you decide to make different changes to the ones you discuss with us.
What if I change the type of home improvement I am doing or don't do any at all?
Don't worry if you change your mind, when you come back to tell us the energy efficiency changes you have made to your home you will have the opportunity to update us to tell us what improvements you have made.
If you decide not to do any at all don't worry there is no impact to your mortgage however you will no longer qualify for the reward.
Can I register before finding a fitter/installer?
Yes, you can. However, it's important to remember that a TrustMark registered fitter/installer must carry out the work in order for you to qualify for the reward. If you are using the Government Green Home Grant, your supplier must also be TrustMark registered. Visit their website to find an installer in your area.
When and how will I receive the money?
You will need to complete the Green Living Reward claim form and complete on your mortgage by 31st December 2021. We will check your details with TrustMark and pay your reward into the account you use to make your mortgage payments within 30 days. If your payment doesn't arrive for any reason, please contact your Mortgage and Protection Adviser.
What happens if my home improvements are delayed?
We recognise that we are living in uncertain times while we all deal with the impact of Covid-19.
If you are unable to complete the work on time for any other reason outside of your control, you should use the Green Living Reward claim form to let us know no later than 31st December 2021.
How can I decide what home improvements to make?
Have you tried our Home Energy Saving Tool? It's really quick and easy to use. Just answer a few questions about your home and it'll give you a personalised action plan with estimates of your Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating, energy costs and your home's CO2 emissions.
Your action plan will also give you tips on which energy efficient improvements you could make and how much they might cost. It will also show you how much money each improvement could save you and will give you an idea of the benefits for the environment.
What types of home improvements are eligible for the reward?
There is a wide range of eligible home improvements, all of which are eligible under the Government Green Home Grant. You can find more information on this here.
Do I have to use a TrustMark approved fitter/installer?
Yes, you do. TrustMark audit their registered suppliers to make sure that work is carried out to the right standard.
Halifax is not responsible for ensuring the quality of the improvements and you should carry out your own checks to ensure the supplier is suitable to carry out the work. Visit the TrustMark website to find a registered supplier in your area.
How do I prove the work is completed?
We are working in partnership with TrustMark. TrustMark is a Government-endorsed quality scheme which covers work carried out in or around people's home. When you complete the Green Living Reward claim form, we will ask for details of the improvements you have made and the name of your TrustMark registered fitter/installer.
If you have used the Government Green Home Grant, we will also as for your TrustMark certificate ID number. Your supplier will need to log the work on the TrustMark data warehouse to generate a certificate. TrustMark recommends that you make sure your supplier does this within one month of the work being completed.
What if I am not satisfied with the work completed?
We understand that finding reputable tradespeople to carry out home improvements can be a big job in itself. That's why we have teamed up with TrustMark.
The TrustMark Quality Scheme gives homeowners confidence in the suppliers they use.
Halifax is not responsible for ensuring the quality of the work carried out and you should carry out your own checks to ensure the supplier is suitable. If you find that you are not happy with the work carried out, you should speak to your supplier in the first instance, if the work carried out is covered under a scheme provider you should also contact the appropriate provider.
